Up to 50% of Australian children experience tooth decay*
What causes tooth decay and cavities?
Tooth decay is caused by acid-producing bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria, together with food particles, form plaque, which attaches to exposed tooth surfaces, dissolving the minerals that make up the hard enamel. When tooth decay breaks through the enamel to the underlying layers of the tooth, permanent damage occurs in the form of a hole or cavity.
Why is fluoride so important for my child?
Fluoride is important in the prevention of cavities, helping to fight tooth decay in two ways:
1. It strengthens tooth enamel so that it can better resist the acid formed by plaque.
2. It helps repair teeth already damaged by acid.
Whilst fluoride cannot repair cavities, it can reverse early signs of tooth decay and therefore prevent new cavities from forming. Fluoride is especially critical to the health of your child’s developing teeth. Multiple clinical studies show that regular use of a fluoride mouthwash gives a clear reduction in the rate of dental decay.
Why use LISTERINE® SMART RINSE™?
Toothpaste with fluoride definitely helps protect teeth against cavities. However, brushing alone doesn't reach all tooth surfaces. By adding a fluoride mouthwash such as LISTERINE® SMART RINSE™ to your child's daily oral care routine, all surfaces of the teeth will come into contact with the beneficial fluoride, and even cavity-prone areas between the teeth can be repaired and strengthened. What’s more it removes food particles and germs that brushing may miss. Listerine Smart Rinse is alcohol-free and available in two great tasting flavours, berry and mint.
Oral Care tips for kids:
When your child’s permanent teeth begin to come through, there are a few important points worth remembering that can help prevent future problems:
- Limit sugary foods and acidic drinks and instead encourage healthy snacks and fluoridated water
- Brush twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste
- Use Listerine Smart Rinse as part of a daily oral care routine
- Have regular dental check-ups
