What is Scabies?

Scabies is a skin infestation caused by a small mite, Sarcoptes Scabiei which is only barely visible to the naked eye. The female mites burrow just under the surface of the skin, laying eggs in burrows. The burrows are often difficult to see.

The most common symptom is a widespread, itchy rash, which can be especially severe at night time, or when the body is warm after exercise or a hot shower. The usual scabies rash may be quite widespread, in the same areas equally on both sides of the body and may affect almost any part of the body, particularly in infants. In adults, the centre of the chest, the back and the head are usually clear.

How do you catch Scabies?

Transmission of the mites is by close body contact, most frequently by prolonged holding of hands, but it can occur during any skin to skin contact, including during sex. Anyone can catch scabies and anyone with whom you have had close contact, other than a casual handshake, could be a donor.

It may take some 4-6 weeks after infestation for the allergic reaction to develop.

How do you treat Scabies?

Treatment involves the all over application of a special cream called a scabicide, which kills the mites in their burrows. Once such cream is Lyclear.
