Tips

Outdoors

  • When you're outside, think about the pollen in the air. It's the major outdoor culprit.
  • Minimise outdoor activity, during spring.
  • Keep car windows closed while driving.
  • Leave lawn-mowing and leaf-raking to someone else, or wear a mask.
  • If possible, stay indoors when allergy counts are at their peak.
  • Eliminate large trees near the house, as moulds can thrive in the shade they produce.
  • Remove any problem plants from the garden.

Bedroom

  • Bedrooms contain carpets, furniture, and surfaces that can be dust magnets and dusty rooms mean dust mites, a common allergen. Dust mites are a problem as people can react to their droppings.
  • Use window shades or curtains that can be laundered frequently.
  • Don't hang sheets or clothing outdoors to dry, as pollen and moulds can collect on them.
  • Wash bed linen in hot water and use your dryer's hottest setting to kill mites and control animal allergens.
  • Minimise dust and dust mites by choosing carpeting with low pile, or better yet, eliminating carpeting altogether.
  • Keep dust from accumulating by cleaning surfaces regularly.
  • Keep small knicknacks, books and CDs inside cabinets or drawers so that they don't collect dust.
  • Avoid feather and down pillows. Use dust mite covers for mattresses and pillows.
  • Avoid or minimise the amount of soft toys.

Living room

  • Houseplants, mould, pets and dander are what to watch out for here.
  • Keep the number of houseplants to a minimum, as they promote mould growth.
  • Avoid smelling cut flowers, as the close contact can put you in touch with pollen.
  • If carpeting is necessary, choose a type with a low pile. It offers fewer places for dust and allergens to hide and is easier to clean.
  • Keep dust from accumulating by cleaning surfaces regularly.
  • Surfaces should be smooth, easy to clean and free of objects that can collect dust.

Pets

  • Animal dander is a common allergen. It's the oily secretion from the skin of your pet.
  • Keep your pet outside as much as possible.
  • Keep your pet out of the bedroom and off all furniture.
  • Have someone else brush your pet outside of the house to remove loose hair and other allergens.
  • Regularly clean or replace any bedding or carpeting that is contaminated with animal dander.
  • Have someone wash your pet weekly.

Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist, please see your health care professional.
