What to look for
It's important to be able to tell the difference between an allergy and a cold, so you can take the right treatment and avoid unnecessary discomfort.

    Need an Allergy Test?
If your symptoms keep coming back but you can't decide whether they're due to allergies, you should visit your doctor. He or she might suggest a series of allergy tests.

Skin Prick Tests, Radioallergosorent (RAST) Skin Prick Tests involve putting
drops of a variety of suspected
allergens (like pollen, dust mites,
pet dander, mould, certain foods)
on the forearm or back, then lightly
pricking the skin through the drop
with a needle. If you are sensitive
to a particular allergen, it will show
itself with an itchy, white, raised
bump with a red surrounding area. This is a blood test that determines
sensitivity to suspected allergens
and is more expensive than a skin
prick test. Unlike skin prick tests
where the result is available
immediately, RAST results might
take a few days to be processed.
